In many countries, the gap between the rich and poor is increasing. The rich people are becoming richer while the poor are growing poorer. What are the possible causes of this? What can be done to reduce this gap between poor and rich?

It is true that the income inequality is getting worse between the haves and the have-nots. From my perspective, I think there are two main reasons, and the government can do much more to mitigate the problem.

The first key explanation of this issue is the cost of living, as far as I am concerned. As a matter of fact, the living cost has become so prohibitively high that life is complex and difficult. For example, ordinary residents have to work two jobs in order to cover their housing, transport and food, and therefore they can spend little time or money on learning practical skills needed to get access to more and better job opportunities. Furthermore, another important factor in regard to this matter is that there are loopholes in our tax system. Wealthy families tend to hire professional accountants to help them escape from paying taxes by transferring funds to their children or establishing shell companies either at home and abroad.

However, there are various steps that the government can take to deal with this consequence, from my point of view. First of all, the government is encouraged to introduce new policies that are beneficial to inhabitants. For instance, it holds merit for the government to invest more money in building affordable housing, cheaper public transport and low-cost health care in order to ease citizens’ financial burden. In addition, the government is well-advised to perfect our tax system, so wealthy people have to pay a certain amount of tax legally and fairly. Imposing an inheritance tax on the rich is the optimal example to embody this idea.

In conclusion, high living expenditure and tax loopholes are chiefly responsible for the income discrepancy between the wealthy and the impoverished, but I truly believe that the government can certainly implement a range of measures to tackle this situation.
